What is Steelpan?

The steelpan, indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago, is the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Its evolution dates back to the 1930s and 40s, rooted in the drumming traditions of African groups on the islands. The instrument emerged as a product of the people's energy directed towards cultural self-expression, particularly during carnival festivals.

Beyond its musicality, the steelpan symbolizes the nation's unique cultural and historical identity. It represents unity and resilience, embodying the spirit of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1992, the steelpan was officially recognized as the national instrument, acknowledging its significance at home and abroad.
